Three Rivers Source Region

Yushu Prefecture in southern Qinghai Province, China is home to the Three Rivers Source National Park, one of China's first national parks. Three of Asia's major rivers, the Yellow, the Yangtze and the Mekong Rivers all have their source in this same high-altitude region.

Natural Beauty

The Three Rivers Source region is part of the much larger Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, a huge grassland and mountain region that eventually lead to the slopes of the Himalayas. Every vista is filled with stunning mountains, glacial rivers, wide grasslands, yak herds and wildlife.

Traditional Lifestyle

Nomads in the region still practice traditional methods of high-altitude animal husbandry. Yak herds are brought to the valleys for winter, then led back to the high pastures for summer. Butter and yogurt are made right on the farm. In warmer areas farmers can grow a highly nutritious, high-altitude barley that is roasted, ground, and mixed with yogurt for breakfast.

Spiritual Significance

The local populace predominately practices Tibetan Buddhism, although people of all faiths will find their hearts drawn to worship by the stunning beauty around every corner.
